Walgreens in Garden City
I love the new Walgreens in Garden City so far. I stopped in to see how coupon friendly they were and ended up meeting Denise. She was resetting the pain medication section. We talked for a few minutes and she told me they were getting ready to redo the whole store. So what does that mean to you and why am I writing about it? This is why...
Burn this image in your mind:
The deals were endless at this Walgreens. So Denise says to come on by and come by often just to see what has a clearance tag on it. Just walk in and scan for the orange tags since you have it memorized now. This is the reason I carry my coupons with me all the time. You never know what you'll find. The manager was busy so I didn't get time to speak to him about their policies but everything ran smoothly.
Be sure to look up front for the current ad and the monthly instant value coupon book. You must give the cashier the in-ad coupons so don't forget to have the ad. Register Rewards are similar to ECBs but you cannot use a RR on the same product that gave you the RR and get more RRs. If that confuses you then go here to find out how to work it at Walgreens.

Get Deals Quicker
If you've tried to get coupons at work but can't get to this page to get the links, I've got some exciting news! Now when I post deals or alerts you can get them directly in your email inbox. I thought this might help keep you up to date with current coupon deals in the Coastal Empire and Savannah area.
Have you ever clicked on a coupon link and ended up with the dreaded message "there are no coupons for this campaign"? When manufacturers put out coupons they set a limit on the number of coupons they distribute. When that number is reached the coupon is then pulled. The link may still be circulating but the coupon will not print. Does that mean you'll never get the coupon?
Sometimes the manufacturer will reset the coupon campaign and let you print again. They will even make the coupons regional so if it's a coupons.com type coupon you may have to enter an different zip code. I've found the amount saved is changed sometimes. Here's is what happened to me this week.
I clicked a link and the coupon wouldn't print. The print limit had been reached. I waiting a couple of days and clicked the link again and the coupon printed!! Yay for me right? Well instead of getting the $5.00 off coupon I wanted I ended up with a $2.00 off 2 products. Oh well, I missed out and that bites. So to help you never miss a great deal I have hooked you up with a subscription link. Look over to the right and you'll see it. Just enter your email address and you'll always be in the know.
My regular weekly email will continue going to the Coastal Couponers out there. If you would like to be included in the weekly news email you can leave a comment and I'll get you on the list.

Twenty Two Cents After Coupons!
I did two transactions at two different CVS locations in Savannah and Garden City. Here is how I did it and how I paired my coupons with sales and ECB's.
In the first transaction
2 Nivea Women Bonus Body Wash - 5.99 ea = $11.98
1 Nivea Mens Body Wash - 4.99 ea = $4.99
1 Nivea Mens Body Wash - 3.99 ea =$3.99
2 Gillette Body Wash for men - 4.00 ea = $8.00
1 Cvgrl 50% off was $6.99 pd - 3.49 = $3.49
1 Cvgrl 50% off was $6.99 pd -3.49 =$3.49
Total purchases $35.94
Coupons Used
-$4.00 off $20.00 purchase I received in the mail
(2) -$4.00 off Nivea BW for Women = -$8.00
(2) -$3.00 off Nivea BW for Men = $6.00
BOGO Gillette Body Wash for Men - Took off $4.00
BOGO Covergirl took off $3.49
Total coupons used = $25.49
Paid $10.45 plus tax = $12.69 and I got back Extra Care Bucks
$8.00 for the Gillette
$5.00 for the Nivea
Paid $12.69 and got back $13.00 thus making a profit of thirty one cents
The second transaction
2 Mens Nivea BW $3.99ea = $7.98
2 Womens Nivea BW $4.99 ea = $9.98
1 Palm Oxy Pwr was $1.49 on sale for $0.99
Total Purchases = $18.95
Coupons used
(2) -$4.00 off Nivea = $8.00
(2) -$3.00 off Nivea = $6.00
-.75 off Palmolive
Total Coupons = $14.75
Total Due $4.20 plus tax = $5.53 and I got back $5.00 Extra Care Bucks
Looking at the total out of pocket it would be $18.22 and I ended up getting back $18.00 in ECB's for a total spent of $0.22.
Now remember that the Gillette and Old Spice Body Wash is on sale this week for $4.00 at CVS and you get back $4.00 in ECB's so you are really getting this for free. When you combine this with coupons you can make $4.00! Currently there are several coupons you can use. Here is a breakdown.
Old Spice or Gillette Body Wash 10-18oz $4 Get $4 ECB Limit 2 meaning you can only get the ECBs twice.
Here is a list of coupons you can use for the deal:
Old Spice Body Wash or Fresh Collection Anti-Perspirant/Deodorant (of equal or lesser value), FREE wyb any Old Spice Body Wash or Fresh Collection Anti-Perspirant/Deodorant (1.7 oz+) P&G 5/2
Gillette Body Wash BOGO P & G 5/2
Gillette Deodorant or Body Wash $4.00/2 P & G 5/2
Now here is how to maximize your money
Buy 2 washes use a BOGO or the $4/2 and pay $4.00 for 2
Buy 3 washes use a BOGO AND $4/2 - The BOGO attaches to the free product and you pay $4.00 for 3
Buy 4 washes and use 2 BOGO AND 1 $4/2 thus giving you 4 bw for $4.00 for 4
These coupons came out in the May edition of the P&G BrandSaver in the Savannah Morning News.
Your best bet and something I didn't do because I was #1 in a hurry during my lunch break and #2 they only had 2 on the shelf, is to purchase 4 body washes and use the 3 coupons I indicated. You will pay $4.00 and get back $8.00 so you've made a profit of $4.00. This is when you would add to your stockpile. If the shelves are empty you can always get a raincheck. CVS rainchecks do not expire and you can order coupons from a clipping service to pair with the sale price you get.
I hope you understand all of this. It's something you will learn over time so don't get frustrated. You will eventually start looking at every single ad and concentrating on the items that give you something back. Then you'll be able to search for coupons to go with the product so you can get the best deal and maximize your money! Start with one store and master it first.
I think that's enough for now. I will keep posting if you keep reading. I enjoy the search for deals and helping others find the best prices in Savannah. Why pay full price for something you don't have to?

We Use Coupons
I have to tell you that I'm happy to see SMN put a shopping section in their paper this Sunday. It's a syndicated service from Utah with a local shopper but I guess it's pretty cool that it will be an addition every Sunday. Now if they would only offer specials for people who purchase their paper JUST for the coupons.
I have found an even better way to learn about coupons, living a frugal life and chat with people that have tons of knowledge when it comes to saving money. You may have seen their button on the sidebar.
We Use Coupons is the best site I've found when it comes to saving money. There is a wealth of knowledge that cannot be found at any other site or service. The creator of the original binder method of coupon organization even gives us bits of knowledge with her posts every day. There are so many nice people that welcomed me when I joined and I've learned how to maximize my deals even more.
I like We Use Coupons because they promote ethical coupon usage. If you aren't sure about a coupon and how to use it, just ask the forum. They will give you an honest answer and help you use the coupon legally. They do not encourage fraud, unlike some of the sites I visited. They will even look at your deal and let you know if you can do better. They have made me a better consumer overall. I'm more understanding of my cashiers and store policies.
You all know that I have used coupons for years. If you follow this blog you also know that I have never been one to stockpile. We Use Coupons is teaching me the art of having a stockpile. I admit that I will never have a TP tower like Foggy and I will probably never have cases to pick up at the store like Mr. Coupon but I can say that I'm not totally against the idea anymore. I don't know...give me an awesome ad preview and high value coupon and I'll place special orders. You'll have to visit the site to understand.
Check out We Use Coupons when you have time. You will learn so much and meet some really nice people in the process.

Price Check.....All Aisles
Since we live so close to Food Lion and Piggly Wiggly I've been shopping at both stores. Well, that is until recently. I have discovered that Food Lion has better prices and sales. Pig prices are a little high for my taste. When I look at the ads for the Pig it seems they are really focusing on their private labels. Both stores are coupon friendly. I never seem to find the little coupon booklets or tear pads and peelies that Food Lion shoppers talk about. I don't know if our store doesn't get them or just doesn't put them out. I think their prices are good compared to the Pig but I'm learning a little more about Publix.
Our town is getting a Publix this winter. They broke ground on the shopping center a few months back and progress is really being made. I wanted to see how they compared to Food Lion so I've started doing my own little test. I've shopped Kroger, Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly and Publix. Of course we have a Wal-Mart in our town but that doesn't mean I'm gonna go there. No way! You can't make me go there! That's a whole new topic. My test is only the above grocery stores.
I have all the shopper loyalty cards for the grocery stores. Publix doesn't do that whole card thing so I've been thinking they were the highest store. Boy was I wrong!
Shopping at Piggly Wiggly isn't so bad. I really like our store operator and the cashiers and staff are always very nice. It's a little crowded but that's not a problem until "rush hour" when everyone is on their way home. Greenbax are great and I'll go in to make sure I'm getting my Greenbax but I can't do the majority of my shopping there. I'm looking for rock bottom prices.
Kroger is not too far from here and it's fairly new. I saved quite a bit during the last mega event but that seems soooooo long ago. Yes, I wish they would hurry and have another mega sale. I find some deals here and there. I just didn't see where it warranted the drive past Food Lion. I'll still go to Kroger on occassion but I believe Publix is gonna be my store.
The Publix I am trying is one of 3 in the area. Our store is one of 2 new ones they are building. That will bring a total of 5 Publix stores in our area! That's fine with me. The store is very clean and the staff is friendly. What I really love is their coupon policy. In this economy you must earn my business and make me want to spend my hard earned money with you. My hard earned money must go far if I'm going to be your customer. I think Publix gets it!
My coupons are doubled and competitor coupons are accepted. I can get rainchecks with a smile instead of a sigh of disdain. I'm asked if I need help getting my bags to the car. The cashiers offer helpful information about their coupon policy and do everything to make sure my experience is a good experience. I had one cashier remind me that they accept coupons from Kroger. I told her I was trying Publix before they got to our little city and she was trying to sell me on her store. I like that.
Publix will let me use their store coupon with a manufacturer's coupon. That pleases me. Publix will gladly provide me with store coupons to use. Yes, my Food Lion manager is very nice but that doesn't change the fact that we have been stopped from using FLIPs with manufacturer coupons. FLIPs are Food Lion internet printables you get when you sign up for their newsletter. One of the managers at Food Lion isn't so coupon friendly. She says the prices are already low and almost acts as if the coupon is taking money out of her pocket. I didn't argue with her but I did look at the actual savings from Food Lion compared to Publix.
I have gotten much more for my money at Publix than I have anywhere else. I can't wait until ours is finished and open. Maybe some of the nice people from the store I'm shopping at now will come here and train the employees in customer satisfaction. One can only hope.

Chugal
Being frugal comes easy when you're working towards a goal doesn't it? I like to consider myself partly frugal with a chance of cheap. Cheap + Frugal = Chugal right??
So I told you I would post the recipe for laundry detergent. Here is how to make your own:
1 Box Borax
1 Box Washing Soda - I found Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda at Kroger
1 Bar finely graded soap like Zote from Save A Lot or Fels-Naptha (Kroger again) or Ivory (for sensitive skin)
Mix well. You want the bar soap to kind of disappear into the powder. You will only use about 2-3 tablespoons for each load. Heavily soiled clothes may require 4 tablespoons. I like the scent of Fels Naptha. If you want a different scent you can always check out the soap making aisle at Michaels and get essential oils and don't forget to use a 40% off coupon. Only a few drops should be used.
Detergent companies are the ones who have made us believe that something is clean if it smells good. Well I can say with confidence that just because something smells nice doesn't mean it's clean. Vinegar is a good odor killer as is baking soda. For strong odors use 1/4 cup of baking soda. Baking soda is a great softener too. For greasy stains you can pretreat with Dawn.
You won't get a ton of suds but your clothes will be clean. You can use this in high efficiency machines since it's low on suds.
Making your own detergent is very cost effective. You can get around 350-400 loads for under $7.00. That's a couple of pennies per load.
There is a liquid version of this floating around out there too but I don't have a 5 gallon bucket to store the stuff in.
Tide will be on sale starting Sunday at CVS. Even with a coupon it's still expensive compared to 350 loads for $7.00.

Easy come - Easy go
Wow this blogging thing isn't that easy. I'm not a computer person so it takes a little time to figure things out.
I did get this neat new blog theme and learn how to change my page. However, I'll warn you there are certain things you will lose when you change things. I lost a whole bunch of widgets and screwed up my posts but that's okay. If you are reading this, you know how I am.
So I'm planning a big shop this weekend. I need to do some freezer cooking and I'd like to try out the homemade laundry detergent that everyone is talking about. I'll post the recipe for you. The reviews from people who used Tide are fabulous. They rave about it. It sounds pretty wonderful to me. You can get gallons of soap for much less than the price of Tide and it works great. We'll see.
So I'll be working on the blog a little to get it back up and running and I hope you'll hang in there. I'll be posting pictures of my coupon organization system for you too. That in itself is worth the wait.
So off to search for great deals here in the Coastal Empire! It feels good to be back.
