Remember these points when shopping at Walgreens:

• You must have the same number of items as you have coupons.  That includes Register Rewards since they count as coupons.  For example - you have 5 items with one coupon for each item.   If you want to pay with 2 Register Rewards you need to get 2more items.  You can get anything - like school supplies perhaps.  It just needs to be an item that registers on the register.  Why do you think they have those caramels sitting RIGHT THERE at the register?  We call those fillers.

 

• You can only get one Register Reward offer for each identical item per transaction - If you want to take advantage of the ProGlide RR deal you can only get one per transaction.  If you try to buy 2 you will not get more RR.  You can certainly break up your purchases into a couple of transactions.  OH - and be careful about your transactions.  Here's why:

 

• You can't use the Register Reward that you get from a purchase to purchase a product from the same family that gave you the first RR.  I know, confusing isn't it?  Okay let's say you buy the ProGlide and get the $5 RR.  Since that's a P&G product you can't turn around and use it on another product from Proctor & Gamble.

REDUCED FURNITURE IN SAVANNAH

Furniture Buzz suddenly shut their doors and are in the process of filing bankrupcy as of August 11, 2011.  If you ordered from these people and did not get your merchandise, the Better Business Bureau advises to file a claim with the Chatham County Magistrate's Court.  You can do that online at www.chathamcourts.org

We don't need anymore furniture really.  Our house is jam packed full of free toothpaste!  That's a joke Mom!  We do need a little computer armoire to put the printer and the modem in.  I also have a little scanner that I scan my purchases with for Nielson.  I'll post more about that another day.  Anyhow, back to the furniture.

We have a great resource right here in Savannah that we need to take advantage of.  I kept seeing signs for Furniture Buzz and always wondered what it was.  I just never visited their website.  They have a building on Mall Terrace right off of Waters Ave.  Did you know they have a showroom too?

For Christmas my mom bought herself a sewing machine cart and ordered it through Furniture Buzz.  I told her they were right here and I ended up running by and picking it up for her instead of having it shipped.  I discovered a treasure trove!

They have a great showroom with really nice furniture.  They also have a door you can walk through and find clearance priced items.  These are items that have been returned due to scratches or dents received during shipping or just plain pickiness.  They need to get this furniture gone so the prices are greatly reduced and I mean 70% on some items.

FRAUDULENT COUPONS

If you have an email address you've probably gotten a forwarded message with a coupon attached.  Did you know that some of these coupons are not real?  There are people out there who commit theft by producing fake coupons and innocent people like us get to pay for it.  Many retailers are hesitant about internet printable coupons and they have every right to be. 

Fraud costs businesses millions of dollars each year and many of our very own grocery stores have been victims.  I've gotten coupons for free Cokes, Doritos, Pepsi and Folgers.  I could tell they were fake right away.  Apparently some of our stores aren't training their staff on coupons.  They are accepting these fake coupons and then finding out they can't be reimbursed by the redemption center.  Now these same stores do not accept internet printable coupons.  A few of our local coupon users have been accused of fraud and highly embarrassed in the checkout line trying to use coupons that were fraudulent but they had no idea.

So how do you know if your internet printable coupons are real?  Here are 9 signs that your internet coupon may be a fake.

1. You aren't required to purchase any product to get a product free - Most companies require you to make a purchase of one product to get another product free.
2. High maximum value that far exceeds the cost of the product - The Doritos coupon has a value "up to $5.00" but a bag of Doritos is never $5.00
3. The UPC code is one part - UPC Codes on real coupons are 2 parts.
4. Specific weight not listed - Real coupons refer to a specific size, weight or variety
5. Check the redemption center address - A Dallas Texas address is phony
6. PDF files with pages of printable coupons - Most companies do not send out emails with PDF coupons attached. (exception: Food Lion Internet Printables)  Go directly to the manufacturer's website and check for coupons.
7. Look for obvious alterations
8. Unusually long expiration date - Valid internet printable coupons generally have short expiration dates like 3 months or less.
9. Barcode should be clear and able to be scanned - Check for fuzzy barcodes or signs of alteration

A word to cashiers - Check for large numbers of printable coupons.  The limit is normally 2 so if someone comes in with 50 internet printables for $12.00 off Charmin, I'd be a little skeptical.

Currently some of the phony coupons being passed include Coke, Pepsi, Doritos, Playtex, Folgers, Hanes, and Ben & Jerry's.  There are hundreds more.  If you want to check a list you can visit the Coupon Information Corporation (CIC).

Retailers need to make sure their staff is trained to recognize these fraudulent coupons and know how to appoach the person trying to redeem them.  The Association of Coupon Professionals has a free poster retailers can request or just go HERE and print to assist them.  They also have information on how to handle a person using fraudulent coupons.  They even offer rewards for information regarding these fake coupons.

When you receive an email with a coupon you confirm as fake hit "reply to all" and let eveyone know not to use the coupon.  Let them know it's not real and they should notify anyone they may have sent the coupon to as well.

STOP WASTING MONEY ON TOOTHPASTE

No I'm not going to tell you how to make your own toothpaste or anything like that.  Many people think that couponing the way I coupon wastes money on things we don't need.  This is kind of true since we really don't need any toothpaste or body wash or even meat for that matter.  We have plenty.  Our budget for grocery shopping is set and doesn't change too much.  It's divided into different sections.

Our first section is health & beauty items.  This is anything we use on our body like shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, razors.  We have a section for human food, pet food and then cleaning supplies.  You can keep your budget under control and still build up a small stockpile.  It's pretty easy.

Start out by planning your meals.  You don't have to put it in stone.  Just make sure you have a plan each week.  If Tuesdays are softball practice and you get home late you'll of course want something quick and easy.  You may want to do a sandwich bar buffet or make ahead casseroles you just pop in the oven.  If your plan changes it's okay.  You plan so you can utilize your money better.

Look at the sales at your store.  If ground beef is on sale think of the ways you can use it.  Cheeseburger casserole one night, spagetti a couple of nights later.  Then maybe on the weekend you can grill hamburgers.  I know some people hate burger because it's a red meat and that's really bad so how about ground turkey or if you prefer, tofu.  I just want to make a point.  I'm saving so much elsewhere that I have extra to take advantage of other sales.

So, planning my meals and shopping the sales gives me $10.00 left over in my grocery budget.  Here is how you stretch your budget.  Go for the really cheap or free deals.  Here's a real example from our local Kroger this week.

Crest 6.4 oz toothpaste is 10/$10.  Our Kroger doubles coupons for .50 or less.
Use either of these coupons
.50/1 from 6/27RP or 7/4P&G  - these double to $1.00 making the toothpaste FREE.


Oral B Indicator toothbrush 10/$10, use $2/2 from 7/4P&G get 2 FREE

Now have I wasted any money?  No they were FREE.
Am I buying something we don't use? - Ick, no of course we brush our teeth.
I still have my $10.00 in tact.

That's just a small example I give to those who doubt the savings or think I'm on some kind of addictive spending spree.  I'd much rather pay $0.22 for 6 months worth of body wash when I don't really need it instead of spending $3.00 on store brand body wash every month for a total of $18.00 in the long run.

Now I do have to find somewhere to put my extra purchases but that's another post for another day.

COUPON PREVIEW FOR SUNDAY 7/25

This Sunday we should receive 2 inserts in the paper.  We should get Smart Source and RedPlum but always be sure to check if you buy your papers from a store.  BE NICE and ask the cashier if you can just check to make sure they are there before you spend the money.  You can also decide if you want to purchase multiple papers.

This list is not set in stone and will vary depending on your area.  Historically in Savannah we don't get a good Redplum and miss many of the high value coupons.  Charleston and Jacksonville get better inserts in my opinion.

COUPONS WE GOT IN THE SAVANNAH MORNING NEWS 7/18

This week wasn't so bad.  We did miss a few good ones if you compare it to the coupon preview I sent out earlier this week.

8 WAYS TO GET MORE SWAGBUCKS

I've had a few people sign up for Swagbucks and I promised them I would post something on how to get more Swagbucks.  If you aren't using Swagbucks I gotta ask "why are you giving up free money"?  What is Swagbucks?  It's a search site powered by Google and Ask.com that awards you points for searching and other activities.  You can then redeem those points for gift cards or other items in the Swag Store.  In a way it's like frequent flyer miles for computers.  If you have to be on it all the time, you might as well earn free stuff right??!?  Here is what I do to get more Swag Bucks.

1.)  Install the Toolbar - This is just like a Yahoo toolbar.  Matter of fact, I don't use the Yahoo or Google toolbar anymore.  I switched to Swagbucks.  You get 1 Swag Buck every day just for having the toolbar.  Also, The Swag Guy or Gal (TSG) will sometimes post a message in the Toolbar that gives you a code for more Swag Bucks.  All you do is take that code and enter it in the  "Gimme" box.

2.)  Do the Daily Poll - Just a second is all it takes and you get 1 Swag Buck just for voting.  That's 30-31 Swag Bucks per month, except for February.

3.)  Trusted Surveys - I did all the profiles and I sometimes get to do a survey.  If you don't qualify then you don't get the Swag Bucks listed BUT you get 1 Swagbuck every day just for checking!  That's another 30-31 per month. If you get a survey and complete it to the finish you will get Bucks but you must wait until they post.  Sometimes that can take a few hours.

So far we are up to at least 84 (using February) Swag Bucks every month just for doing 3 very small things that take less than 5 minutes. 

4.)  Offer Walls - I don't do these.  I don't have time and I really don't want to take advantage of any offers really.  That means I have to take time to respond to emails and I do that enough already making sure my readers are taken care of.  I'd much rather do that than offers. :)  I do have friends that do the offers.  They say they've gotten a lot of Swag Bucks through offers.  Their tip is to skip Wall 1 and go to Wall 2.  Please be careful on Wall 1.  Make sure you have already gotten a "junk" e-mail box ready for the "stuff" you might get. (this was the first rule of couponing I learned)

5.)  Searching - This is the place I get most of my Swag Bucks.  I've won 50 just from searching so here is what I do.

• I use the toolbar when I can to search. 
• When I search, sometimes I'll purposely misspell a word.  Then when I click on the "did you mean?" term I usually win.  For example, I'll search for "nationl mall" and  I'm asked if I meant to search for "national mall".  When I click that I usually win.
• Sometimes I'll add a word.  For example, I search for "coffee" and I don't win so I go back up and add the word "decaf" then search again. 
• Search for images or video.  I found this by accident.  I searched for a photo but I didn't put that at first.  When I clicked on "images" I won.  I tried it a couple of times and it worked.  You'll see the categories over the search box.  Web - Images - Video - News - Products
• Go through all the pages of results.  I've found that if I am really searching I will go through and around the 3rd page I get a win.
• I'll search for my bookmarks instead of going straight to them.  Instead of using your "favorites" to go to your regular sites, just type it in the search box.  I search for Coastalcouponer ALL THE TIME!
• When you do win, remember what you searched for.  I've found that when I search for "Mega Swag Bucks" I usually win.  I keep searching for that!  I keep winning!

Now you can't just sit in front of your computer and search and search and search and search...you get my point.  You will probably only win 3 times per day through searching, maybe 4.  Just space it out over time so you don't trigger that message about searching too much.  I typically come away with about 20-40 Swag Bucks per day from searching.  Not bad for something you probably do anyway. 

6.)  Codes - Swag Bucks codes are released from TSG and are good for a couple of hours.  You can find them in the blog, on Twitter, in the newsletter etc.  Sometimes there is a game involved or a search.  When you find the code, just highlight copy & paste the code into the "Gimme" box and you get Swag Bucks.  NEVER post a code you find.  This will get your account suspended.  You can tell other people there is a code and give them a hint but don't post the code.

7.)  Swidget - I've made it really easy for you to check and see if there is a code.  At the bottom of this page you will find a box that tells you how many Swag Bucks I have.  You can click on "SC" and check for a code.  This is the best and easiest way to never miss a code.  I use it myself.

8.)  Mega Swag Bucks Day!  (MSBD)- My most favorite time of the week has to be Friday.  Not only is it usually the last day of my work week, I can win MEGA Swag Bucks.  On Friday your odds of winning larger denominations of Swag Bucks are increased.  They give away upwards of 400,000 Swag Bucks every Friday and you can win from 30 to 1000 in just one search!

If you do all these and average about 16 Swagbucks a month you can end up with an Amazon card every month!  Again, I'm using February. lol

Here are a few other ways to get Swag Bucks:

• Refer your friends - When they win, you win.
• Shop online - You get rewarded for your purchases.
• Trade Ins - Trade in your old phone or electronics for Swag Bucks.  These are valid trade in sites for recycling and swapping.  You just happen to get Bucks for being green.
• Connect your account to Facebook and you will get more referrals. 

Did I mention that if you sign up today you will receive free Swag Bucks?  That's right, you get them just for signing up!

FINDING THE BEST DEAL

I feel like some people think I spend hours at a time cutting coupons out of the paper or driving around aimlessly burning gas going from store to store to store.  Some people may think I spend gobs of money on stuff we don't need or use.  I can't change their minds or make them feel any different than they do.  What I can do is help others learn how I can buy a six month supply of name brand body wash for the price of one "store brand" body wash or how about six months worth of Cheerios for the regular price of three boxes.

So how do I do it?  It's all in the planning.  WeUseCoupons has great information on the upcoming sales for my stores.  I started out with one store and I have worked my way up to several so it does take practice. 

First you need to know what's going to be on sale.  You can get ad previews of many of the stores like CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, and others.  I always go to WeUseCoupons for CVS.  I see what's going to be on sale and what offers Extra Care Bucks.  I love those things!  I make my notes on the back of an envelope on what I can get free or under $1.00 and those items that have good prices based on my prior knowledge.

Next I look through my coupon binder to see if I have any matches unless that's already done for me.  Most of the time the match ups are already done on WeUseCoupons but I tend to have that done a little ahead of time.  I also pull the coupons I'm going to use and put them in my pocket in the front of my binder.  I also look at the coupon previews.  Did you know that some of the August insert previews are already available?  Why do I look so far ahead?  So I can order extra coupons if I need to.

Let's say there's a great deal on shampoo.  It's on sale for $2.99 and you get $2.99 in ECBs making it free after ECBs.  Great deal right?  Well, it gets better if there's a coupon for $1.00 off because you would actually be making $1.00 on each bottle you purchase.  I use ECBs I have earned from other purchases to pay any out of pocket expenses.  I may also have a small charge for the services the clippers provide.  This is paid out of PayPal usually and that money comes from surveys I do on line on the weekend and Inbox Dollars.

I also use the database to find coupons if I need to. I can find printable coupons or find out what insert a particular coupon came out in. It takes a minute to load because there are thousands of coupons in the database. Check it out over there on the left side of this page.

So my coupons are pulled and my list is handwritten (chicken scratched).  I do have a spreadsheet that I use since I tend to use more coupons than most people.  I enter the items, the sales price, the ECBs offered and the coupons I have.  It gives me the total out of pocket that should be charged so I know exactly what I should be paying.  I place everything in a ziploc bag and staple the bag to my printed list.  Then off to the store.  If there are any empty shelves I get my rainchecks! 

I am in the stores mostly once per week but no more than twice unless there is what I call a Grand Slam Sale.  This is a sale where there are no limits to my purchases and there is an unlimited supply of coupons.  Woo Hoo!  Those are few and far between.  I also keep my binder with me all the time.  That's just in case I run up on a clearance like I have so many times before. Maybe I will learn how to post the spreadsheet for you.  Until then you can leave a comment with your email or email me and I'll send you a copy that you can use.

I really hope you find a system that works for you.  I love being able to tell people how little I actually have to spend each week.  The best part is paying off the debts one at a time!

COUPON PREVIEW 7/18

This weekend we will have only one insert in the paper.  Remember that coupons are regional and the larger papers tend to have the best inserts.  If you only buy a paper if the coupons are good, like me, then you really want to check PRIOR to purchasing.  

Before you purchase a paper ask the cashier nicely if you can look to see what the coupon insert looks like this week.  They may let you peek.  If you don't like them, don't buy the paper.  You can save money sometimes by asking a neighbor or family member if they will give you their inserts.  I have ordered coupons before from a clipping service.  Instead of buying a paper I took that money and used it for coupons I really wanted.  You can also trade.  I'm trading dog food coupons for cat food coupons right now.
