Upcoming Review...I Need Your Help

I need your help making a decision.  You know I love CSN Stores and I even hosted a giveaway here last year.  Well, CSN contacted me about doing a review for you guys.  I was so excited to be offered the opportunity but I have a problem.  I have no idea what to review.  That's where you come in.  You know CSN has over 200 online stores that offer everything from swing sets for kids to cat trees.

Visit CSN Stores and browse around a bit.  Come back and tell me what I should review.  I'll say that I'm leaning towards a cat tree but with a 20 pound cat I must consider whether or not he could actually climb it.  Soza needs exercise though.

Hey guys help me out then stay tuned for my review!

February Best Time To Buy

Did you know that February is one of the best months to find chocolate on sale?  Certain items are better buys during certain months of the year.  So, what should you expect to see in the sales papers during the shortest month of the year?

President's Day sales will be a big event in February.  You will find some of the same items from January like organizational products.  Calendars will be reduced as well as any leftover red and green storage containers.  Flooring, furniture and winter apparel will join exercise equipment and diet accessories in the sales ads.  You will see the White Sales with markdowns on linens with winter colors and themes.

Football snacks and your typical Superbowl items will be on sale this month.  You may see a few good deals on chips but these aren't really something you keep for extended periods of time.  You can freeze cheese so you can stock up on that and dip related products.

February is also American Heart Month. Wear your red and save on low dose aspirin, Fish Oil supplements and those heart healthy butter spreads.  Have you noticed all the Heart Healthy sales already?

National Canned Food Month - You'll find deals on all foods canned from veggie to fruits and even meats.  I saw lots of canned chicken coupons last year.

National Hot Breakfast Month - Did you see the free sample offer for Cream of Wheat?  There is more to come.  I got great deals on Eggo Waffles and those frozen pancakes.

Who can forget Valentine's Day?  We've already seen coupons for candies in heart shaped boxes.  You'll see a few Hersey promotions.  February is also "Celebration of Chocolate" Month.  So be sure and stock up on chocolate.  You know you need it.  Did you also know that  the week of Valentine's Day is also National Condom week.  How fitting.  You'll find deals in that department as well.

February 3rd begins year 4708 on the Chinese Calendar and the Chinese New Year celebration.  It's the Year of the Rabbit.  You can find all kinds of interesting information at the Chinese New Year Page.  You'll find promotions in celebration of the Chinese New Year.

The Westminister Dog Show will bring us many specials on Pedigree, Iams, Purina and other dog related items.  The Daytona 500 and Indy 500 usually bring a few sales.  I've seen mega-type sales in conjuction with these races at Kroger and Food Lion.

Here is a list of produce that will be in season.  Try to buy as much as you can store when they are in season. You'll pay less and you can dehydrate, can or freeze the items and you'll be able to enjoy them year round at a better price.

Artichoke
Asparagus
Avocado
Broccoli
Carrots
Cauliflower
Celery Root
Celery
Chard
Collards
Fennel
Grapefruit
Kale
Kiwi
Leeks
Lemon
Navel Oranges
Radish
Raspberries
Red Potatoes
Russet Potatoes
Spinach
Strawberries

Rite Aid Video Values For February

Rite Aid's Video Values for February have been posted and we have some pretty good coupons. This month we have over $130.00 in savings available to us.  They are giving us another $4/$20 and a bonus $2.00 off.

Not familiar with Video Values?  All you have to do is create an account, watch short videos and you get a coupon.  Most of the videos are just 30 second ads.  After each video you have to enter a "captcha" code then your coupon goes in your account.  You don't have to print them right away.  They are available in your account until you print them or they expire.  After you print each coupon it will disappear from your account.

Video Values coupons are Rite Aid store coupons and can be combined with manufacturer coupons to offer you even more savings. The February videos will be available to watch until February 26th.

Don't expect to watch them all in one sitting.  I recommend doing a few each day until you get them all watched.

Here is a list you can print out and keep for your coupon inventory.  Credits may not give you coupons but they count towards your beauty bonus coupons.

Coupons In The Savannah Morning News 1/23/11

Here are the insert coupons from the Savannah Morning News today.  I have taken this list from my coupon preview post.  All the red coupons are the one's we didn't get.  The blue coupons either had a change in value from the preview or weren't listed at all.  I have tried to highlight the value changes in bold so you can see the differences.

How do you use this list?  Print the list out and place it with your binder or your coupon cutting area.  When you see deals that list a coupon you can always go down your list to see if we got the coupon here.  I indicate the number of inserts I have.  As I use the coupons I'll mark them off.  I use this list to help me determine if I need to order from a coupon clipping service or if I have coupons I can trade.

If you post this information please give the proper credit and link back. Thank you!!

Coupons to Expect 1/23

You can expect to get 2 inserts in the paper this Sunday.  We'll have the usual SmartSource and Red Plum.  Make sure you are looking in your paper BEFORE you make your purchase to see if all the inserts are there.  We won't get all these coupons because coupon inserts vary by location.  Read the article on why coupon inserts differ depending on where you live.

DND 5 or 9 indicates a coupon that says "Do Not Double" and the first number of the barcode.  If the number is 5, most registers will double the coupon automatically.  If the number is 9 the register will not double the coupon automatically.

ETS means "Excludes Trial Sizes".  If you see a term you don't understand just click on "Terminology" over on the left side of the page.

Soft Drink Specials - Coke and Pepsi

Whether you prefer Coke or Pepsi you are in for some good deals this week and you don't even need coupons!  You can get each brand for around $2.00 per 12 pack.  That's a good stock up price in my price book.  Here is how you get the deals.

Food Lion has a Coke/Kraft promotion going on right now.  When you buy 5 Coke or Kraft items you will receive a $5.00 credit on your total immediately.  The price for Coke 12 packs this week is 3 for $10.00.  When you buy 5 your total will be around $16.67 then you will receive $5.00 off making your out of pocket expense $11.67.  This works out to $2.33 per 12 pack or about $0.20 per can.  You can do this once per visit.  That means if you buy ten 12 packs you will only receive $5.00 not $10.00.  You can take your items to the car and come back in for another visit if you like. You must have their MVP shopper card to get this deal.

CVS has the Pepsi special.  Buy $20.00 worth of Pepsi products and get $10.00 back in ECBs.  The 12 packs are 3 for $10.00 this week.  Just buy six 12 packs for a total of $20.00 plus tax, out of pocket.  You'll get back a $10.00 ECB.  Then you can do it again.  If you have ECBs to start with you can even reduce your initial out of pocket.  You can do this twice this week with your ExtraCare Card.

Remember, CVS allows only 1 ExtraCare card per HOUSEHOLD.  If you and your spouse each have a different card and you live in the same house you are in violation of the terms of your agreement with CVS.  I will not promote misuse of the CVS ExtraCare Card.
I use ECBs to help reduce my out of pocket expenses.  Since I took advantage of the Pepsi deal this week I put my ECBs to good use with coffee.  Maxwell House Coffee in the 34 ounce size is on sale for $5.99 until 1/22.  There have been coupons floating around the last few months and I had 2 that were expiring today with a value of $1.00 each.

I purchased 2 Maxwell House Coffees at $5.99 each and 1 Dawn Hand Renewal dish detergent.  Here is my transaction using my $10.00 ECB.

2 Maxwell House - $5.99 ea
1 Dawn Hand Renewal - $0.97
3 Aveeno Hair Products on Clearance 75% off  - $1.87 ea
Total = $18.56 plus tax $0.84   $19.40

I used the following coupons:
2 $1.00 off 1 Maxwell House Coffee - found online through WUC database
1 $1.00 Dawn Hand Renewal - From the Organized Home Booklet through P&G
3 $1.50 off 1 Aveeno Hair Product from SmartSource.com (I printed 2 and my coupon buddy gave me one of hers.
Total was $11.90
Paid with $10.00 ECB and $1.90 cash and I can submit my Aveeno Rebate for free lotion.  What?  You think rebates aren't worth it?  I bet I can change your mind!  Give me a chance and I'll post the best rebating tips so you can be the judge.

$20 Amazon Gift Card For $10

Do you shop on Amazon?  How would you like a $20.00 gift card for only $10.00?  It's legit and I even bought one myself.  If you have a Swagbucks account you can also score 280 Swag Bucks.  If you don't have Swag Bucks it's still an AWESOME deal today.

Living Social is one of those sites that has a great daily deal in your area and you have 24 hours to take advantage of it.  Todays deal in a large number of cities is the $20.00 gift card to Amazon for $10.00.  You can follow my referral link if you want to go directly to the site.  If you purchase through my referral link I may get a free deal.  (If 3 of my friends get this deal with my link I can get a free deal from them.)  That is not why I'm telling you this.  I just personally think this is a good deal to get.

Now, how do you get the Swag Bucks?  DO NOT go to the link to the deal through this page.  Go over to your Swag Bucks page.  There is a post on the front page in the slide show.  This is offered as a "Special Offer" you can take advantage of and you're account will be credited with 280 Swag Bucks.  That's only 170 Swag Bucks from a $5.00 Amazon gift card.

I hope I haven't confused you.  To summarize -
Go to Living Social and see if the deal for your city is the $20.00 Amazon Card for $10.00.
If you use Swag Bucks get this deal through your Swag Bucks page.
Don't know what Swag Bucks are?  Check it out here.

Either way you win but you gotta do this before midnight!!

Coupon Inserts in the Savannah Morning News 1/9/11

Here is the list of coupons we received in the Savannah Morning News 1/9/11.  We received 3 inserts.  1 Red Plum and 2 SmartSource.  The SmartSource was very tiny as was the Red Plum.  The coupons we got are in black.  The coupons we didn't get are in red and the coupons that we got that were not in the preview or had a change in value are listed in blue.

Sometimes I find that if we didn't receive a Red Plum coupon I can go to the Red Plum website and find it.  Play around with the zip codes though.

Many people are noticing missing inserts in their papers.  Please ask nicely to check the paper for all the inserts before purchasing if you can.  If you subscribe to the paper you can call to complain but I never had much success with that.

Inserts vary by city or region.  You can read this article on why we get different inserts.  I've found that the Charleston Post Courier and the Jacksonville Times Union get the larger versions.

Print this list so you have a record of what we got and didn't get.  Keep it with your binder and indicate the number or inserts or copies you have.  This makes it easy when doing matchups.  You can see if we got the coupon or you have to order it.  You can read this article on using a coupon clipping service. It can sometimes be a better investment.

Happy National Soup Month!

Did you know we have a whole month devoted to soup?  January is National Soup Month so I will honor soup with a favorite memory.  Tomato soup is a comfort food for me.

I remember my mother alway put a pat of butter in my tomato soup before I put crackers in the bowl.  I know it's not healthy but I still put butter in my tomato soup.  I'm from the South and that's what we do.

We lived on our farm about 25 minutes from the nearest fast food joint so that wasn't an option.  When time was limited and Mom wanted us to have a hot meal it would usually consist of some sort of soup.  At the time I would have preferred a Happy Meal but now I appreciate the healthier choice.

Why not make a pot of homemade soup this month?  If your resolution is to eat healthier here is a little idea to help you stay on course when you're short on time.  Make a very large pot of homemade soup.  (Double recipe)  After dinner let the soup cool then spoon into paper cups to make one serving in each cup.  Then place the cups on a cookie sheet, cover with plastic wrap or foil and freeze overnight.  The next day you can remove the paper cup from around the frozen soup and place all the "soup cubes" in a freezer bag.  When you need a quick snack just pull a "soup cube" from the freezer and heat it in a bowl.

Here are some coupons to help you celebrate National Soup Month.

TLC's Extreme Couponers

I thought it was time I shared my opinion of "Extreme Couponers" on TLC.  Tonight was the second prime time airing.

You may have missed the show "Extreme Couponers" on TLC but you can't miss the buzz it has created.  The coupon forum I participate in "WeUseCoupons" actually crashed from all the hits it received.  The site is experiencing an increase in traffic again tonight.  Not all the buzz was positive though.

The name of the show says it all.  "Extreme Couponers" was a show about people using coupons to the extreme.  It wasn't called super couponers for a reason.  These people were asked to create the ultimate, extreme coupon shop so this show could be filmed and that's what they did.  I wouldn't waste my time to watch a show called "Couponers".  It was all about the shock value.

What we all need to remember is this was a television show on a network that relies on ratings.  People like to watch drama.  Look at the ratings for shows about housewives and people from Jersey. The producers wanted examples of couponing to the extreme and they got what they asked for.  Then they cut and edited to put a "shocking" spin on everything.

I do not agree with the way the show was edited but I understand this was the hook.  This is what drew people to watch.  TLC knew exactly what they were doing.  They even cut sentences in half to make it appear even more extreme.  Now, that being said I can't defend the participants and say they were taken advantage of.  Many couponers were interviewed for this show and some bowed out because they knew it could take a bad turn.  I can't and will not personally attack anyone either.

There are a few things we did not get to see in clips or the show.  This may or may not shed a negative light on couponing.  I believe it has gotten the attention of many people that need help in today's economy.

The shoppers planned their shops well in advance and placed orders with the stores so they would not clear shelves.  They even had to get clearance with the corporate offices.  Most of the products were set on the shelves and in bins so when the cameras started rolling the shoppers had to grab the items so a "good shot" could be filmed.  That was one reason the first shopper and her husband were upset.  Her order of pasta had to be taken out of the cases "for impact".  Remember Amanda's trouble at the register?  Here's what you didn't see.

The registers are programmed with limits for items and coupons.  She was pushed to do only one transaction even though they knew there was a computer limit.  You didn't see that filming in the store took 10 hours so they could get the shots they needed.  They also didn't show you how everything except the cat food and ramen noodles were donated.  You didn't hear the end of her sentence about her huge toilet paper stockpile giving her "joy".  The sentence was cut in half and you can clearly hear this in the show.  When interviewed she said that she got joy out of her stockpile when she saw what the retail prices were in the stores. Of course she gives away a ton of stuff when she finds someone in need.

What else did you not see?  You didn't see the good that came out of the shops.  Here is a partial list of items that Nathan Engels donated to Franklin Area Community Services after the show courtesy of J. Engels, WeUseCoupons.  This was actually filmed by the crew of TLC but not shown.

700-800 boxes of Total Cereal. (We purchased 1,100 boxes so 300-400 boxes goes to our churches grocery giveaway monthly, we still have some and continue to give monthly to that program)

600 Sticks of Deodorant
60 Cartons of Oatmeal
400 Boxes of Jello
100 packages of floss
200 toothbrushes
100 cans of Hormel Chili
300 Bottles of Gillette Body Wash
200 Bottles of Aspirin
100 Packs of Rolaids
150 Bottles of Salad Dressing
50 Cans of Disinfectant Spray
50 Diabetic Meters
and various other household items in smaller quantities
For pictures of the "cereal tower" and the actual donation you can go to this page at WUC..
Donating is something that we can all do through our coupon usage.  When you get something free, grab a few extras and throw them in a bin.  When the bin fills up you can take it to a local shelter or church.

Will this show make everyone "Extreme Couponers"?  Probably not.  Could this cause companies to stop issuing coupons?  Probably not.  These companies know what they are doing.  We already have limits, restrictions and shelf clearers.  Proctor and Gamble started limiting the number of "like" coupons to 4 a couple of months BEFORE the show aired.  Coupon usage experiences waves.  When times are tough we see increases in coupon usage.  When things turn around people don't spend the time to coupon anymore.  This is demonstrated in the 1970's and 80's.

I can't close without mentioning stockpiling. How much money should you have saved up in case something should happen?  I've heard experts say 3-6 months of living expenses.  In this economy, many people have found that wasn't enough.  Who are we to say how much a family should have?  Many people shop based on sale cycles.  Some people keep a small stockpile of health & beauty items only.  Many of the people that stockpile keep a good supply for their extended family in addition to their immediate family.  It is not my place to judge or personally attack anyone.  I will continue to use coupons, not clear shelves and keep my stockpile.

I keep a small stockpile for my family and stock up on items my parents and other members of my family use.  If it's something I can get free I will buy enough for 6 months, not 3 weeks.  If I can take something off my shopping list for the next 6 months and only bring it home when it's free, you can bet that's what I'll do.  Each family is different and so is the economy.  Yes, there will always be another sale but you know what I've noticed?  The toilet paper sales aren't as good as they used to be.
